Using flooring, carpet or a wooden walkway for your beach wedding

I have a good argument for providing flooring for your beach wedding ceremony. First, let me start by saying please make certain you inform your guests that your beach wedding ceremony will be on the sand. I will never forget the wedding ceremony I coordinated for a couple at a resort where all their guests flew in from out of town and they failed to tell people that the whole celebration would take place on the beach. The mother of the groom showed up in a dressy formal suit wearing pantyhose and 4" heels! It was quite a scene.....

Safety is another huge consideration. Look at your guest list. Elderly guests may have trouble navigating through the sand.

  • Rent flooring - Rental companies will provide wooden sections. It is labor intensive for them to put down, so it is costly. They lay the hard surface down and cover it with turf or carpet.

I have had couples who marry on the beach and also have their reception on the beach choose to rent a platform strictly for a walkway, and an area for the wedding party to stand. I also suggest renting dance floor if you are planning on any dancing.

Some musicians will ask for a platform to be set up on. Be prepared to provide this for them.

  • Make your own - I worked at a resort where we built wooden sections out of pieces of standard plywood and framed them in with 2 x 4's. The sections were painted white to match the sand. We could set them up in several different configurations. If you have the time and the ability, this is much more economical to do then to rent them from a party rental company. You can always sell them to a local rental company for their inventory.
  • Rent or purchase heavy indoor/outdoor carpet - Rental companies will have carpet runners, and if they specialize in wedding rentals, chances are they will have heavy white carpet runners in different lengths. This will create a walkway for you. Regular wedding runners do not work on the beach - they will fly away! You can also purchase remnants of carpet inexpensively from a carpet company.
